History and Meaning of Beji Buleleng Temple
Beji Buleleng Temple is held by Krama Subak Beji, the people of Sangsit Village and several other communities related to the history of Beji Sangsit Temple. According to one of the mangku there, this temple has been established since the 15th century, where the piodalan tradition has been carried out as a form of gratitude for the blessings of prosperity given by Sang Hyang Dewi Sri.
The uniqueness of this temple is that there are three piodalan days, namely:
- Aci-aci or Meaci-aci, which is held right on Purnama Kedasa.
- Ngusaba, which is held on Purnama Jiesta.
- Pengebekan (Pujawali), which is held on Purnama Kapat.
This piodalan tradition is an expression of gratitude for the harvest to Dewi Sri, the goddess of prosperity.
The name “Beji Temple” also has a meaning as a bathhouse or well, which is a source of fertility. This is because to the east of the temple there is a former spring that used to function as a pond. This pond was used by farmers as a source of irrigation for rice fields, which later became known as subak.
Subak Beji Temple has great meaning and benefits for the people of Sangsit Village, especially the farmers. As a sacred place, the farmers (pengamong/pesungsung Subak Temple) ask for safety and welfare to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi through his manifestation who resides in the Subak Beji Temple.
